Spiritual culture is what makes BALI ” BALI “ In fact this famous ” island of the Gods ” has the last intact and still dominant. Spiritual culture in the world. It”s demise has been predicted by Westerners the entire 20 Th Century – yet as the millennium approaches, it remarkably remain vital and strong. The Balinese are obviously master of maintaining their traditions and traditional values which are all founded on and found in the exotic mix of their Spiritual culture.
It originated in Java circa 10 Th century, when Maharaja mixed Siva Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism, both transported from India, Called ” Siva Buddha “, it also incorporated many elements of Java”s native shamanism. The unique spiritual culture it created reached it”s Javanese zenith in the mighty Majapahit Empire { from Maja – Pite }. But Sumatra and the rest of Java converted to Islam and drop the Majapahit out.In 1478 the Royal Court made the exodus to Bali which was part of the empire.
It turn out to be perhaps the most successful retreat in history ! In Bali the culture bloomed like a lotus.Though the rest of Indonesia become Muslim, remained and remains , intensely unique – uniquely Balinese.Being – a self – sufficient island certainly helped. But basically , the people value their Spiritual Culture and the “ fullness of life ” it provides, to the degree of devotion necessary to sustain it. it is their active Spirituality that continues to breathe life…to feel Spirit…into the Culture. and back into them.
Creative expression has always been natural and central element of this Spiritual culture. Historically wherever survival has been easy to achieve, Spirituality and artistry have flourished. Bali is a classic example – the free time and energy afforded by island”s fertility are the fertile inspiration of both. In fact, the Balinese language has no word for ” art , so native and ingrained it is in their SPIRITUAL CULTURE..
